The highest quality steering gears and boxes

Sweet Manufacturing offers sprint car steering gears that lead the industry in quality, dependability, and performance. Using advanced valving technology that is years ahead of the competition, these gears are the lightest available for power steering. High quality is assured through extensive testing on our own in-house steering box dyno. All boxes are centered and stamped with the exact degree of the pitman shaft, which allows the steering box to run on the center tooth and avoid tight spots during travel.

For top performance, these gears should be paired with our sprint car power steering pump.

Our power steering boxes, available in two durable models, are complete with top-tier technology to amplify your steering system.

FAQs

What does a steering box do?

A steering box converts the rotational movement of the steering wheel into linear motion, which turns the wheels of a vehicle. It also provides a mechanical advantage, making steering easier and more responsive.

Can a steering box be adjusted?

Yes, many steering boxes have an external adjustment screw that can reduce play in the steering. However, over-adjusting can cause binding or premature wear, so it should be done carefully or by a professional.

What are the advantages of a steering box?

Steering boxes are known for durability, strength, and simplicity—especially in heavy-duty or off-road applications. They can handle high loads and offer greater steering feel in certain setups.

How long does a steering gear box last?

A steering gear box can last 100,000 to 150,000 miles or more, depending on driving conditions, maintenance, and overall wear. Leaks, play, or noise are common signs of aging.

Why would a steering gear need to be replaced?

Replacement is often necessary due to excessive play, steering fluid leaks, worn internal components, or poor steering response. Over time, seals and gears degrade, leading to reduced performance or safety concerns.
